Now Michael Carrick will serve as temporary boss until the club chooses a 'interim manager' for the remainder of the season.
The club said in a statement: "Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will always be an icon at Manchester United, and it is with sadness that we have taken this hard decision". Whilst the last few weeks have been frustrating, they should not overshadow all of the hard work he has put in over the last 3 years to help pave the way for long-term victory.

"Ole Gunnar departs with our heartfelt gratitude for his tremendous work as Manager and our warmest wishes for the future." His position in the history of the club will be safe for the rest of life, as not just a player, but also as a wonderful person and Manager who provided us with many memorable moments. He will indeed be welcomed back to Old Trafford as a member of the Manchester United family for the rest of his life."
