For Manchester United, Wayne Rooney Had An Incredible 2009/10 Season

Wayne Rooney shall go down in history as one of the best English players of all time, with one season especially at Manchester United sticking out.

In England's top division, he is the only player to have scored over 300 goals.

In his heyday, he was unstoppable, and he was the closest Man United and England had to a genuine complete forward in a long time.

His greatest season was undoubtedly the 2009/10 campaign, when he was entrusted with becoming United's main goal scorer for the first time.

Everyone could see a ready-made solution when Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez left in the summer of 2009.
By conceding those two goals, Rooney said, "we gave up a lot of goals." In order to succeed, "we knew we had to put in the work and learn a new style of play."

That innovative strategy was basic, but generally unplayable, with Nani on the left flank and newcomer Antonio Valencia on the right. To begin assaults, Rooney would drop deep, move the ball wide, then sprint into the box to meet a return cross from either side.

Rooney had scored 15 goals in 23 games in all competitions by the turn of the year, but it was in January when he really got going.

A 4 haul against Hull City began a run of scoring in ten of the twelve games, resulting in 18 goals, most of which were headers.

Rooney did score 34 goals and assist seven times in all leagues, including 26 goals in the Premier League and five in the Champions League knockout rounds.

Despite the fact that Man United barely lost out on a fourth consecutive league title and were knocked out of Europe by Bayern Munich, Rooney was named PFA and FWA Player of the Year for his efforts.

"You simply get the feeling that you're going to score every time you step onto the field or get the ball close to the goal. It's a sensation that every striker aspires to."

Rooney's best-ever season, however, did not even get him on the 2010 Ballon D'Or shortlist, with Asamoah Gyan, Cesc Fabregas, and Miroslav Klose somehow getting ahead of him.

What are your thoughts on Rooney's 2009/10 campaign?
