PSG Said They Were 'Better Off' Before Lionel Messi, And They're Now Weaker

Michael Owen claims that after adding Lionel Messi, PSG have become a weaker team.

In Paris Saint-Germain's 1-1 tie with Club Brugge on Wednesday, the 6 Ballon d'Or winner made his first appearance in the Champions League.

In attack, Messi was paired with Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, but neither of the three players made a big impression.

With their strength up forward, Owen said BT Sport that he does not think Paris Saint-Germain are the frontrunners for the title.

"This PSG squad with those strikers, as much as we swoon about them, they're all wonderful performers in their own ways," he remarked.

"However, trio puts it weaker for me, so I'm not sure why they're one of the top choices for it" (the Champions League). The English clubs (Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City & Liverpool) are clearly better, in my opinion."

Lionel isn't the only huge player to come Paris this summer.

Free agents Gianluigi Donnarumma, Gini Wijnaldum, and Sergio Ramos joined the club, whilst Inter Milan sold Achraf Hakimi for £50m.

"I really feel like getting players like Donnarumma and Sergio Ramos offers them a greater chance of succeeding it (the Champions League) than buying somebody like Messi," Owen added.

Rio Ferdinand spoke to the forward line, which has been called 'MNM' by the reporters, about what it will require for them to connect.

It's something we've seen from Paris Saint-Germain "Ferdinand was the one who responded. 'There have been far too often times when they haven't put sufficient effort.' We were watching them at Anfield as they walked around. That is the issue.

"I simply think that Messi arriving here, Mbappe would say, 'I've managed to show Messi what I am all about. Neymar was a fantastic player when he was played for Barcelona with Lionel.

"You'd like to believe that would return to their games.

"If that occurs, everybody else has a hard time.. That is a significant if. Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City are in Pool A, with Pep Guardiola's team presently leading the group.
They won convincingly 6-3 Vs RB Leipzig.

On September 28, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain will square off in one of the most important group games.

Do you concur with Owen's observations? Is Lionel Messi making PSG weaker as a team?
