Newcastle 0-4 Manchester City: Man City Will Spend Christmas At The Top Of The Table

Manchester City earned the top position for Christmas with another impressive performance, defeated Newcastle United 4-0.

After only 4 minutes, Ruben Dias took advantage of a communication breakdown in the Newcastle defence to simply head in the goal.

Joao Cancelo subsequently increased City's lead with a magnificent long-range strike from some 25 yards away, added to his assist for the opening goal.

City had appeared disjointed since opening, but their 2nd goal was truly spectacular. A usual smooth passing move, a signature of Pep Guardiola's style, concluded with the ball at Joao Cancelo's feet.

He raced centrally from his broad slot, leaving Joe Willock and the Newcastle defence in his path, and releasing a beauty of a shot from the edge of the box. The effort had not gotten out of 2nd gear, but now this goal was in the top drawer.

The Newcastle did not wither as they attempted to re-enter the game, but they found it very hard to break down Man City and produce clean possibilities. But, when Ryan Fraser was taken down by Ederson inside the box, Newcastle thought they might have been given a penalty.

Mahrez makes the total three! He meets Zinchenko's pass with a shot in the box that defeated the goalkeeper. It was actually given offside, however VAR overturns the verdict.

The resilience shown by Magpies in the first 45 minutes, however, did not persist in the 2nd half, as the Blues eased the sting out of the match and finally won with 4-0 goals via Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez.

Finally Sterling wrapped up the game!

Newcastle have yet to defeat a team in the top 10 this season, whilst Man City will now enter the festive season as the Christmas Number One.

Manchester City will spend 2021 Christmas at the top of the standings, having extended their margin over 3rd placed Chelsea to 6 points after they were held by Wolves.
